Why Does My Dog Throw Up After Eating Something Cold?

By Adam Conrad | Last Updated November 25, 2021

Why Does My Dog Throw Up After Eating Something Cold?

It’s never a good idea to feed a dog anything too cold! Not even in the summer, even if the dog is suffering from heatstroke!. A reason for your dog’s vomiting could be the buildup of harmful bacteria in the cold food or drink. Always make sure that what you feed is at a temperature where it restrains bacterial buildup.

It is not uncommon for our dogs to throw up. Sometimes they eat grass or they eat too many treats in one day. In this article, we will discuss how and why eating cold food can cause your dog to throw up.

When Should You Be Concerned About Your Dog Throwing Up After Eating Something Cold?

If you notice your dog is throwing up consistently, then it is time to take them to the vet. It could be unrelated to cold food and just be a stomach bug or some other illness. Your dog might just have trouble eating foods that are so cold because their internal temperature is so high. You should always be concerned when your dog throws up, but remember they could be getting sick for a lot of reasons. It is best to keep a record of what your dog ate that day so you can talk out with the vet all the possible reasons your dog is throwing up.

Why Does My Dog Vomit After Drinking Cold Water?

There could be a number of reasons. They might have just been drinking way too fast. If that is the case, you want to slow down their drinking by giving them smaller amounts of water at a time. Another reason could be your dog is feeling unwell and drinking water could have triggered them to puke.

It could be a sign of a more serious problem such as liver or kidney failure. If you can rule out that your dog is not vomiting because they drank too much water or because the cold water upset their stomach, talk to a vet immediately. If it is a serious problem, you would want to know sooner than later so you can try to fix it.

Why Is My Dog Throwing Up After Eating Ice?

Just like with people, when we eat or drink too much of something we can make ourselves sick. Same with dogs. There really is not a problem with your dog eating ice. It is probably a sign that your dog either ate something bad or is sick. Watch your dog for a few days and if you notice they are constantly throwing up, that is when you will want to see a doctor. But it is very unlikely that your dog is throwing up from eating ice.

You also could just be feeding them too much ice. Even in the summer when it is blazing hot and you are trying to cool your dog down, it is never smart to feed them a ton of ice. Instead, try using a wet towel to cool them down. You don’t want to cool them down too fast.

Can Ice Upset A Dog’s Stomach?

Eating too much of anything can cause anyone’s stomach to be upset. So yes, ice can upset a dog’s stomach if they ingest too much of it. Besides that, there really isn’t too much of a worry with your dog eating ice. After all, it is just frozen water.

Can Dogs Eat Ice Cubes?

It is okay for dogs to eat ice cubes, although it is preferred if you crush the ice. There was a rumor that went around the internet for years suggesting that ice or ice cubes can cause bloating in your dog and lead to death.

This is false and just a rumor.

So whether you decide to give your dog ice cubes or not to eat, just know your dog will not die from eating an ice cube.

Is It Safe For Dogs To Eat Ice Cubes?

Yes, but you need to be cautious.

Chewing on ice can potentially break a dog’s teeth or even worse, your dog could choke on an ice cube. Is it safe? It can be, but that does not go without saying you should be watching your dog anytime you give them an ice cube to munch on.

Can Ice Cubes Kill A Dog?

The real issue with ice cubes is that it could stick to a dog’s tongue or they could swallow it and it could get lodged in their throat. Choking is a serious danger which of course could lead to death. This is why it is so important to supervise your pets when you give them an ice cube or anything really that they could potentially choke on. So there really is no danger with an ice cube because it is just water, but if the ice cube manages to get stuck in their throat, now we have a serious problem.

Cold Water/Food Causing Vomiting?

It is less likely that they are throwing up from cold food or water and more likely that they are just throwing up for different reasons. Dogs can throw up for many reasons. Maybe there was a change in their diet recently. Maybe you bought a new brand of dog food that they are reacting to. Or they could have some stomach or gastrointestinal issues that are causing them to vomit after eating. You could always experiment by giving them something cold to eat versus something warm. Your dog might have just eaten grass and after eating regular dog food they threw it all up.

If you become concerned, take them to the vet so you can find the root cause of the vomiting.

Is It Safe For My Dog To Eat Its Own Sick?

The simple answer is that your dog will probably be fine if it eats its own vomit. But we should really discuss the difference between vomiting and regurgitating since they mean different things.

Your dog vomits when they are trying to get rid of bad stuff from their body whether that be toxins or bad food. Your dog regurgitates when it vomits food that did not even reach the stomach yet. This happens when your dog eats too quickly.

When your dog regurgitates, the food is usually undigested so your dog might go and eat it again. It won’t cause any harm to your dog, but you might want to give them some fresh food anyway.

When your dog vomits, you probably want to prevent your dog from eating it because they would just be consuming more of what already made them sick. Plus, there is a lot of acid that came from their stomach and you don’t want to ingest that a lot.

It’s best if you can prevent your dog from eating their own vomit, but it won’t kill them.

Dogs puke a lot. It is best to find the cause whether it is from bad food, they ate too quickly or they are sick. You can never go wrong by speaking to a doctor. Keep an eye out on your dog and watch what they eat and how often they throw up, but it isn’t likely to be caused by the temperature of the food.
